Thomas Walsh was the first of the Walshes to be identified in this search. His family history is somewhat remarkable in that it is a history of a family that literally scattered like the wind spreading to all points of the globe. No dates for his birth or death have been found as yet, but he is the starting point for the rest of this story. He either owned or rented the family farm in Coolboy and had seven children. It was said that the Walsh home was referred to as "The House of Scholars," though there doesn't seem to be an explanation for the name.

Coolboy is located in the Parish of Kilbeheny, Barony of Coshlea, County Limerick. According to land and property valuations of 1830 and 1852, there were 20 Walsh land/property holders in the Parish at that time. Further research to pinpoint Thomas Walsh needs to be done in Sir Richard Griffith's land valuations and other Irish resources.

Five of the seven children of Thomas Walsh eventually emigrated to the United States. Thomas, Maurice, Johanna, Ellen, and Patrick came to the United States and started families with the exception of Maurice, who died at the age of 26 in Torrington before he ever married.

Johanna's branch of the family became centered in Cameron, Missouri following her marriage to Daniel Molan. Ellen's branch is centered in Torrington, CT where she married John Kennedy. Patrick Walsh also settled in Torrington where he married Mary Ryan. Thomas Francis Walsh settled in Derby, CT and married Alice Monahan and had two children. Alice Monahan died and Thomas remarried Anna Tobin. There were two other children, Mary and Matthew. Mary moved to Australia in 1888 and married Daniel Hayes and started one of the largest branches in the family in Queensland. Matthew Walsh stayed at home, married Mary Tobin, and settled on the farm maintaining the family link.

Elice Walsh - 1991
Elice Stuart - or "Lecie" as her friends called her - lived in Derby on Olivia Street for many years of her life where she and her husband "Chic" raised their four children. Lecie was the kind of person who was always there for you. When her children raced in from St. Mary's School they would yell, "Hey Mom," and she would appear. When there was a bereavement she was present with her salad and cake. When an elderly neighbor was lonely, she was available for a cup of tea. If you told her a secret, she would keep it. Kindness and gentleness were inherent in her. When her husband's business made it necessary for her to move, Lecie always managed to stay in close contact with her family and friends. Her biggest treat was to go home to 31 Eighth Street, Derby. She loved St. Mary's Church where she was baptized and married. She included the Stations of the Cross from the little red booklet in her prayers every day. Lecie was a very social lady and loved a party and could dance the Charleston. Happiness to Lecie was being with friends and family. She was open to new ideas and saw the goodness in people. She taught herself Spanish and liked to practice with her beloved son, Tony, who lives in Puerto Rico. Lecie wa proud of her family, a collector of newspaper clippings, making every minor achievement a Noble Prize. She was always a care giver and an example for her children. She was devoted and loyal to her dear husband, James. She was a lover of the simple things in life. Just as she enjoyed walking around Derby and up the river in her youth, she became a great walker in retirement. Even in her last years she touched everyone's heart with her Irish eyes and loving spirit.

(Written by Mary Lee & Cookie for priest saying the memorial mass in Derby). She graduated from Derby High School at Derby, New Haven County, CT. Margaret was born on 20 September 1909 at Derby, New Haven Co. CT. She was the daughter of Thomas Francis Walsh and Alice Monahan. As of 24 July 1935,her married name was Stuart.1 She married James William Stuart on 24 July 1935 at Derby, New Haven County, CT.1 Margaret died on 20 February 1996 at Belle Meade, NJ, at age 86.2 Her body was interred after 20 February 1996 at Mount St. Peter's, Derby, New Haven County, CT. Elice was cremated according to her wishes. Her ashes along with those of her husband Chic are buried in Thomas Francis Walsh's plot in St. Peter's cemetary..

John Edward Murphy, Jr.
John Edward Murphy, Jr. inherited his grandfather's love for flying at an early age. Though he was largely unmotivated when it came to school, he quickly got his G.E.D. and went on to take college courses when he realized that it would help him in his goal to be a pilot.
His father taught him to fly, and he soloed before he had his driver's license. He went on to become a pilot with Business Express airline and was a captain and a training instructor. On December 28, 1991 he was conducting routine training of two pilots being upgraded to captain. They were flying in the area of Block Island, Rhode Island when something went tragically wrong and the plane crashed into the sea. All three pilots were killed, but the bodies were never recovered.
Subsequent investigation has revealed that the cause of the accident was "structural failure of the engine mount system causing the separation of the engine and crash." John was born on 18 March 1963 at Derby, New Haven Co. CT. He was the son of John Edward Murphy and Alice Ann Walsh. He was christened in 1963 at Ansonia, New Haven Co. CT. John's occupation: Pilot at Bridgeport, CT, in 1991. John was a captain with Business Express. In addition to his duties as a pilot on their commuter runs, John was also an instructor for other pilots.. John died on 28 December 1991 at Block Island, Rhode Island, at age 28. John was killed while conducting a pilot training mission for Business Express airlines. He was testing two other pilots who were being trained for an upgrade to captain's status. They had taken off from Bridgeport and flown to Block Island where they practiced approaches.
At some point in the training, the plane crashed and all three men were lost. Though some wreckage of the plane was found, the bodies were not..
