many different occupations. He imported the first McCormick cotton
harverster from the U.S. to be used privately on the Darling Downs about
1960.
About 1963, the family moved to Somerset Dam where Basil and his
wife Thora set up Spud-o-Matic Engineering works and later a shop/kiosk
to cater to the tourist trade. It was called the Somerset Tourist
Center. Spud-o-Matic was named for a potato harvester that Basil had
invented and manufactured while living in Nanango from 1952 to 1957.
They had a crop of potatoes on their farm at Barkers Creek. The machine
automatically harvested the spuds.
Thora always helped on the farm including driving the cotton
harvester. She ran the tourist Center. After 1975, she completed her
adult senior course and went on to Griffith University to take up
Environmental Studies. She attained a B.S. and then got a Diploma of
Education. She now teaches at Ithaca TAFE College in Brisbane. She also
teaches Yoga.
