was a very fit man who lived to the ripe old age of 92. She tells that
he was very good with her children and liked to show them axe-manship.
He was a keen outdoorsman, and Sheryl can remember him doing a lot of
gardening when she was a child. He only raised vegetables as he thought
flowers were not so worthwhile!

They had a crop of potatoes on their farm at Barkers Creek. The machine
automatically harvested the spuds.
Thora always helped on the farm including driving the cotton
harvester. She ran the tourist Center. After 1975, she completed her
adult senior course and went on to Griffith University to take up
Environmental Studies. She attained a B.S. and then got a Diploma of
Education. She now teaches at Ithaca TAFE College in Brisbane. She also
teaches Yoga.

Sheryl Anne Hayes is the daughter of Basil Dowling Hayes. She is a
school teacher and she lives with her husband, Anthony John Guthrie -
also a school teacher - at 70 Hayes Avenue, Camira in Brisbane. The

She wrote a note telling that her father Basil tried many different
occupations, but was working as a farmer when she was younger. In fact,
she remembers the family being among the first to own a McCormack Cotton
Harvester, about 1960. By 1963 the family had moved to Somersat Dam and
Basil and his wife, Thora, had built the Spud-O-Matic Engineering Works.
They later added a shop/kiosk for the tourist trade. It came to be known
as the Somerset Tourist Centre.
The Spud-O-Matic was Basil's invention from an earlier period in Nanango
at Barkers Creek. It was a harvesting device for potatoes which allowed
for a tractor to pull the harvester while 2-3 people would sit on it and
sort and bag the potatoes as the machine harvested them.
Thora worked on the farm with Basil in the early years and later ran the
Somerset Tourist Centre. She has since completed an Adult Senior Course
and gone on to Griffith University where she got a B.S. in Environmental
Studies. She then went to Queensland University (St. Lucia) where she
earned her Diploma of Education. She is now a Senior teacher at Ithaca
TAFE College in Brisbane. She also finds the time to teach Hatha Yoga.

Thora worked on the farm with Basil in the early years and later ran the
Somerset Tourist Centre. She has since completed an Adult Senior Course
and gone on to Griffith University where she got a B.S. in Environmental
Studies. She then went to Queensland University (St. Lucia) where she
earned her Diploma of Education. She is now a Senior teacher at Ithaca
TAFE College in Brisbane. She also finds the time to teach Hatha Yoga.. Sheryl was born on 17 January 1952 at Australia. She is the daughter of Basil Dowling Hayes and Thora Bryanne Broome. She became engaged to Anthony John Guthrie on 17 January 1972. She married Anthony John Guthrie on 2 May 1972 at Australia.1

she remembers the family being among the first to own a McCormack Cotton
Harvester, about 1960. By 1963 the family had moved to Somersat Dam and

They later added a shop/kiosk for the tourist trade. It came to be known
